Magma Electric Tubular Heater are the most versatile and the best suited solutions to a large number of applications. Inside the metal tube, a heater coil is embedded and electrically isolated in highly compressed magnesiumoxide. The optimized structure and very high density of the magnesium oxide form the basis for the excellentmechanical and thermal characteristics of the Magma Electric Tubular Heater. They can also be fitted with thermostats and temperature limiters in most applications. Tubular heating elements perform exceptional heat transferby conduction, convection or radiation to heat liquids, air, gases and surfaces. Bends are made to customer requirements.

Tubular elements from Magma are factory-configured to almost any shape or size. Custom bending diameters canbe made upon request. Typically using steel, stainless steel, Incoloy, inconel or titanium alloys, tubular elements are often regarded as the foundation of all heating elements. These heating elements have a strong outer sheath to help protect the heater from physical stress and uses high quality alloys to allow efficient heat transfer from resistance coil to your heating medium.

Careful selection of materials, precise manufacturing techniques as well as numerous tests and inspections ensurethat our Electric Tubular Heater conform to high quality standards and offer an exceptionally long service life.

Tubular heating elements may absorb moisture if they sit idle for a long period of time or get exposed to a humid environment. This might lower the dielectric characteristics of the MgO insulation and cause electrical shorting and premature failure. In order to prove the electrical integrity of a tubular heater, the insulation resistance of each circuit to ground should be checked using a 50 VDC megger. An initial reading of 50,000 ohms or more is acceptable in the field. If heaters do not pass the megohm test they should be dried out. An ideal drying procedure is oven-drying at 375F after removing the terminal hardware. An alternate procedure is to apply a lower voltage (please consult factory for instructions). The target is to attain at least 2 megohms.

The two most critical factors that affect the durability of a tubular heater are:
  • Sheath material
  • Watt density

The sheath material type of a tubular heater depends on the operating temperature and the corrosivity of the medium within which the heater will operate. The watt density distribution on the surface of a tubular heater is critical for two reasons. First it determines the temperature that a heating element sheath will attain within the conditions that the heater is subjected to. The second reason is that every material has a specific maximum watt density that it can tolerate during its heating cycle. Table 1 below lists various sheath materials, maximum allowable temperatures and mediums within which they are recommended to operate.

With enriched industrial experience and knowledge, we are providing an excellent range of Flanged / BSP Immersion Heaters.

One of the most widely used method for heating liquids such as water, oil, heat transfer fluid and corrosive solutions is Magma Flanged immersion heaters. This method is energy efficient and easily monitored and controlled. They are designed for use in tanks and pressurized vessels.

Magma Flanged immersion heaters are easy to install and maintain to provide heat for many processes. These through the-side immersion heaters utilize standard pipe flanges of various ranges in diameter to support high tank pressures of liquids. They are installed through a matching companion flange, obtainable from local industrial supply houses, to the tank wall.

Many different alloys used in the Magma flanged immersion heaters allow the flexibility to help resist corrosion and maintain life longevity of the flanged heater. Steel flanges are typically used for lubricant oils, heavy and light oils, waxes as well as mildly corrosive liquids and low flow gas heating. Applications of steel flanges are process water, soap and detergent solutions as well as de-mineralized or deionized water. Stainless steel flanged heating elements are used with mildly corrosive solutions as well as severe corrosive solutions. Food applications use stainless steel for sanitary purposes.

The sheath materials used can be steel, stainless steel, copper as well as exotic alloys such as Inconel, hast alloy and titanium. Extremely corrosive environments such as salt water should use exotic alloys such as titanium to avoid sheath breach over excessive durations. Industries that use exotic alloys can include military, Chemical and process industries.

Magma offers flanged immersion heaters in varying kilowatts ratings, voltages, temperature ranges, sheath materials and so on. A wide selection of watt densities, heating outputs and flange sizes and ratings make this an excellent heater for all tanks, or irregularly shaped vessels.

Typical applications include preheating different grades of oil, cleaning tanks and heat transfer

Electric Immersion heaters may heat water immediately adjacent to the heating element high enough to promote the formation of scale, commonly calcium carbonate, in hard water areas. This accumulates on the element, and over time, as the element expands and contracts through its heating cycle, the scale cracks off and drops to the bottom of the tank, progressively filling up the tank. This reduces the tank's capacity and, where the immersion heater is secondary to the heating of the water by a coil fed from a gas or oil-fired boiler, can reduce the efficiency of the primary heating source by covering that other coil and in turn reducing its efficiency. Regular flushing-out of accumulated sediment can reduce this problem.Such problems can be avoided at the design stage, by maximising the amount of hot element in the liquid, thus reducing the watts density. This reduces the working temperature of the surface of the element, reducing the build up of limescale. So watt density has to be revised as per application.

Swaged or High Watt Density Cartridge Heaters composed of resistance wire (NiCr) spirally wound bon MgO core as per watt density decided. It is inserted in metallic tube selected as per requirement and space filled with high purity MgO powder. Then it is swaged to compact the loosely filled powder inside for achieving high dielectric strength up to the desired size, diameter and wattage is achieved. The heat generated by resistance wire is quickly dissipated or transferred to the outer sheath. It is machined to precise tolerances and straightness.

Swaged or High Watt Density Cartridge Heaters are fitted into accurately reamed, parallel sided holes for useful life and fantastic performance. It can operate at higher temperature and vibration applications.

Some of the Points to Be Considered by the User for Long Life and Maximum Heat Transfer of Cartridge Heaters:

  • Fitment: The insertion holes of the Metal dies or moulds should not exceed more than 0.002 than the diameter of the heater. As a result of which the hole of the metal die or mould and the outer sheath of the heater will be in close contact with each other and maximum heat from the resistance wire is transferred to the metal. Otherwise, the temperature inside the heater will continuously rise till the heater fails.
  • Calculation of wattage should be proper: Regular ON/OFF of the heater will also shorten the life considerably. We suggest that the Input voltage regulator device should be installed for low to high-temperature fluctuation is required.
  • The temperature sensing device should be placed properly: Thermostat should not be placed more than 1/2" away from the heater wherever possible. More the distance less the life of the heater.

Major Reasons for Cartridge Heater Failure ( Manufacturing Defects ):
  • During the performance of the device failure may result if the tube or ultrasonically wire is not cleaned properly before taking in production or foreign particles or impurities are present in the powder
  • Moisture: Heater may fail if it absorbs moisture from the air which causes failure of IR due to the hygroscopic nature of MgO.
  • Voltage given is not proper: If the wattage is designed as per input voltage 120v, and 240v then the wattage will be 4 times than that of 120v. So the heater will be fused immediately.
